Sanatorium Du Midi

  • The “Sanatorium Du Midi” was founded in 1901 by Dr. Max Bircher-Benner founded in Davos. It was one of the first sanatoriums to specialize in the treatment of nutritional disorders and chronic illnesses and was a forerunner of today's modern wellness and health centers.

  • The sanatorium quickly became a popular destination for wealthy patients from Europe and overseas who came to Davos to recover from the healing effects of the mountain air and climate.

  • During the First World War the sanatorium served as a military hospital, but after the war it continued its work as a sanatorium.

  • In the 1920s and 1930s, the sanatorium was an important place for the development of modern nutritional medicine and many groundbreaking research was carried out here.

  • During the Second World War the sanatorium was again used as a military hospital, but after the war it was reopened and continued its work.

  • However, the sanatorium began to decline in the 1950s, as modern medical developments and the increasing availability of antibiotics meant that fewer and fewer patients chose sanatorium treatment.

  • The “Sanatorium Du Midi” was finally closed in the 1980s and stood empty for a long time.

  • Today there is the staff building of the “Sunstar” hotel and the “Club Hotel” at the front.
