Sanatorium Davos Dorf

History

  • The “Villa Maria” was taken over in 1895 by the two Danes Hvalsoe and Henrichsen.

  • On August 1, 1896, they opened a guesthouse there.

  • In 1898/99 they had the “Davos Dorf Sanatorium” with its “Villa Maria” annex built right next door – on the site of Leonhard Lemm’s farm. Comfort was advertised: electric lighting, low-pressure steam heating and a hydraulic passenger elevator were highlighted. On the ground floor there were loungers that could be used separately for men and women. Most rooms on the upper floors had private terraces and balconies. Conversation and music halls were used for entertainment. The medical premises included an operating room and a bacteriological laboratory, the head physician was Dr. Danegger.

  • In 1902, Dr. Danegger, who opened his own house, from Dr. C. Dönz replaced.

  • In 1905 Dr. Ludwig von Muralt, the successor to Dr. Dönz and the “Villa Cembra” chief medical center was built.

  • The crisis years during and after the First World War led to the conversion of the “Davos Dorf Sanatorium” into a first-class hotel.

  • The hotel was opened in 1934 with the name “Derby Hotel” in reference to the famous Davos ski race “Parsenn Derby”.

  • The hotel remained in the Hvalsoe family until 1989.

Today

  • In 1994/95, as part of the renovation, renewal and expansion of the “Hotel Derby”, a new building was built to the west of the old main building. Demolition and new construction have been planned for years.
